Fatima and Ibrahim’s wedding was filled with all the things that make a beautiful day… a timeless wedding style, gorgeous flowers, a dress made by the bride’s mother and serendipitous coincidences to make the day memorable.
I absolutely love the bride’s look. She definitely nailed her ‘classic, timeless’ brief with the french lace top, subtle pleating in the elegant skirt and a simple headscarf styling to complete the look. Fatima’s look will go down as one of my favourite ‘real bride’ looks of the year, and it’s only February!
Here are all the details:
What marriage means to us Marriage is a beautiful thing. It sounds so cliché, but it’s the truth. You get to live with your best friend, creating memories with each day that comes. But most importantly, when you’re around someone so often, you grow and learn so much about yourself and each other. Essentially, you better yourself and one another.
Style of wedding All we wanted was for our wedding to be classic, so in 50 years’ time, it’s still as perfect, magical and exquisite as the day it happened.
Bride’s dress My mother Mervat is a dress maker so I wanted her to make the dress I got married in. The design was inspired by a Dior runway picture I’d seen years ago. We chose a French lace for the top of the gown,
After looking at popular wedding dress designers and their work, I thought , my Mum is a dress maker, she can whip up my ideal wedding dress, exactly to my liking. My inspiration was one picture in the Dior Fall 2012 collection. It was a beautiful, black, long-sleeve gown, form fitting on the top half and cinched in at the waist. The bottom flowed very modestly in an A line silhouette. French lace and silk dupion were my fabrics of choice. That is what classic is to me. My mum had outdone them all.
Location I never imagined what my “dream” wedding would be like, because it’s not relevant unless it immediately applies to you, I guess. All I knew was that I liked anything fresh, green, natural and relaxing, all refined into something elegant. The Marquee room in Le Montage in Lilyfield, Sydney offered us just that ambience. Being able to have a day wedding and sunshine in the room was so magical.
Flowers I chose I Do Wedding Flowers a week before my wedding. I’ve seen her work before, so I sent her three photos. I asked her to use those as inspiration and one week later, my flowers were delivered and perfect!
Cake Le Montage organised our cake, a minimalistic, three-tiered piece of art. The top and bottom tiers were red velvet and the middle tier was pineapple and coconut. It looked so simple on the outside, but was so delicious!
Photography I love capturing memories in photos. It’s such a beautiful, insightful way to learn about someone. I wanted an artist to capture our wedding day. I wanted the photos to be perfect. Daniel Griffiths did just that. I can’t wait to share them with my kids in the future (God willing).
Handmade elements In addition to my amazing mother sewing my wedding dress, my veil, belt and headpiece were custom made by my sister of Fairer Than Thou Bridal. The hand beaded belt featured an argyle motif of seed beads, with clusters of crystals and fresh water pearls. The similarly bejewelled headpiece was made with the French lace from my dress, which sat so perfectly over the side of my hijab and tied the entire look together in the most majestic way.
Bridesmaids I didn’t intend on having bridesmaids, I just wanted my two amazing sisters – Zaynab and Sumaya – to coordinate with the flower girls. But then God blessed me with a full blown bridal party: Priscilla, Krystal, Surayah and Shourok. They all arrived looking absolutely stunning and incidentally colour coordinated. It was just a beautiful accident.
Makeup Sumaya Manor did my makeup. Her work is amazing. My skin looked flawless and every one of my features was accentuated in all the right ways. She’s just fabulous. One trial session was all it took. I knew what I liked and she understood what I wanted.
Final comments Thank God for all my good fortune, most important of which is being blessed with a good man…
